Abstract

The agricultural sector is an area that stands out for its high energy consumption and environmental impact. The aim of this study is to analyze the energy consumption and carbon emissions in the production of mandarins and to propose solutions to ensure environmental sustainability. The study conducted in Adana province in the 2021-2022 production season provides important information on the environmental impact of mandarin production. According to the data obtained, a large part of the energy consumed in mandarin production comes from chemical fertilizers (33.88%), irrigation water (23.94%) and pesticides (23.10%). In the study, the total energy input in mandarin production was calculated as 41604.60 MJ ha-1 and the energy output as 156582.40 MJ ha-1. The total carbon emissions of the production activities were 954.69 kg CO2-eq kg-1 and it was found that 25.97% of the emissions were caused by the use of nitrogenous fertilizers. These results show that it is important to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers in order to increase energy efficiency in mandarin production. It is emphasized that the use of environmentally friendly and renewable energy sources should be promoted in order to optimize energy consumption and reduce carbon emissions. In particular, the use of alternatives such as farm manure and organic fertilizers instead of chemical fertilizers can help reduce the environmental impact of mandarin production.
