Abstract

Chestnut weevil, Curculio elephas (Gyllenhal) (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) and Chestnut tortrix, Cydia splendana (Hübner) (Lep.: Tortricidae) are important pests that cause quality and yield losses in chestnut production. In this study conducted in Aydın and İzmir provinces between 2021-2023, the damages of C. elephas and C. splendana on chestnut fruits at harvest maturity were investigated. For this purpose, post-harvest fruit samples were taken from different local and registered varieties. Although the general infestation rate in the fruits was low (Aydın 9.44%; Izmir 12.83%, tree year average), the damage reached 80%in some orchards. The total damage of the two species was 14.58%, 5.83% and 7.93% in Aydın and 18.60%, 13.47% and 6.43% in Izmir in 2021, 2022 and 2023 years respectively. The share of C. splendana in the damage was found to be greater than the share of C. elephas. The highest C. elephas and C. splendana damages in the orchards were 30% and 50%, respectively. C. elephas damage was found to be between 0.60-6.75% in Aydın and 1.89-9.17% in İzmir; C. splendana damage was found 3.58-7.58% in Aydın, and 3.00-9.69% in Izmir. The highest damages occurred in Beydağ and Odemiş, followed by Nazilli district. Damage rates varied according to chestnut varieties. The most infestation was observed in Ibrahimbey Işıklar (28,18%) and Karasu (12.00%) in registered varieties; and in Salman (80.00%), Deli (39.50%) and Sarıaşı (28.70%) in local varieties (genotypes). However, the least damage was determined in Sarıaşlama (8.00%) and Tahtakaraaşı (8.22%) varieties. No damaged fruit was occurred in Tapanaşı variety.
