Abstract

This study examined the migration tendencies and perspectives on agriculture of rural youth living in the provinces of Konya, Kayseri and Niğde located in the central south of Turkey. Face-to-face surveys were conducted with 48 village headmen, 308 youth between the ages of 15-29 and 308 household heads. The data obtained were analyzed using the Migration Behavior Index (GDI). According to the findings, 37.0% of the youth considered migrating from rural areas, 58.1% did not want to migrate and 4.9% were undecided. It was determined that there were significant relationships between the migration intentions of the youth and factors such as education, age, gender, household head’s migration intention and agricultural income adequacy. A large portion of the youth who wanted to migrate planned to work in non-agricultural areas where they migrated. It was determined that factors such as the migration method of the youth, work plan and the family’s approach to the migration decision played a decisive role in migration behaviors. According to the results of the study, the social security problem needed to be solved in order for the youth to stay in rural areas. For the agricultural sector not to lose its importance in the region, it is important to make rural areas more attractive, develop agriculture-based industry and integrate it with the countryside, and increase job and social opportunities.
