Abstract

Plants are considered important natural resources in plant pathogen management due to the secondary metabolites they contain. In this study, the antifungal effects of methanol extracts obtained from Verbascum (mullein) species collected from ecologically diverse locations [Sakarya (Arifiye, Karasu), Konya, Bolu, and Manisa] were investigated under in vitro conditions against the soil-borne phytopathogenic fungus Rhizoctonia solani (J.G. Kühn), which has a broad host range. Methanol extracts were prepared from the flower and leaf parts of Verbascum species, and their potential to inhibit mycelial growth was evaluated at different concentrations (0.5%, 1%, 2%, and 4%) in culture medium. All extracts exhibited antifungal activity at varying levels. The highest inhibition was observed in the extract from Konya (55%), followed by the Karasu extract (45%). Extracts from other locations showed inhibition rates ranging between 7.5% and 36.25%. The findings demonstrate that methanol extracts of Verbascum species possess antifungal activity against R. solani, and that the effect increases in a dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that the active compounds contained in Verbascum species should be identified and further investigated for their potential as alternative natural fungicides in biological control.
