Abstract

To combat increasing water scarcity, alternative measures need to be developed, especially in agricultural irrigation where water is consumed the most. An inorganic material pumice and an organic material biochar are frequently mentioned. There are many studies where irrigation water productivity is provided and plant and soil productivity is improved by using these materials alone. However, it has been observed that studies examining the effects of the combined use of pumice and biochar on the amount and productivity of irrigation water in turfgrass plants (Lolium), soil and plant productivity and quality in landscape areas with intensive water consumption are limited. Thus, this study was carried out in a total of 48 pots by mixing pumice (0%, 10%, 20% and 30%) and biochar (0%, 1%, 2% and 3%) into the soil at 4 different ratios according to volume and weight, based on the hypothesis that the combined use of pumice and biochar will improve irrigation water productivity and soil and plant productivity. As a result, 30% pumice+3% biochar reduced the amount of irrigation water by 19% and increased the fresh weight by 2.5 times, thus a 3-fold increase in irrigation water productivity was achieved. Biochar and its increasing rates caused an increase in soil organic matter and total nitrogen content but a decrease in pH, while the effect of pumice was insignificant. However, the electrical conductivity of the soil increased in both treatments. While root length, quality, fresh and dry weights were positively affected by pumice and biochar and its increasing rates, the level of this effect was higher in 30% pumice+3% biochar. As a result, 30% pumice+3% biochar was found to be recommendable for both plant and soil productivity and for the management of fresh water resources in the combat against increasing water scarcity, but it was found important to continue more comprehensive field studies that take into account different rates in this regard.
