Assessment of Production Metrics of Meagre (Argyrosomus regius) in Semi-Intensive Earthen Pond Systems Under Commercial Conditions

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the production success of meagre fish under commercial conditions in earthen pond fish farm and to explore its production potential at an international scale. Global production records of meagre fish were obtained by using FAO Fish Stat Software. In addition, production success in earthen pond fish farm was evaluated on the basis of production data observed from a commercial fish farm. Egypt, Spain, Türkiye, Greece and Croatia are the leading countries producing 1000 tons or more of meagre fish. Global meagre production is increasing each year. The FCR and SGR values of meagre fish fed for 237 days under commercial earth pond fish farm conditions were 0.84±0.04 and 0.69±0.01 %/day, respectively. Additionally, ECR and EPI values were found as 1.60±0.07 ($/kg) and 1.98±0.11 ($/fish) at the end of 237 days, respectively. The production success and profitability of meagre fish was considerably high in earthen ponds. Considering the production quantities of the main producers, it is observed that production quantity can be significantly increased. Emphasizing, the production success observed in semi-intensive earthen pond farm promotes this situation. However, the potential production increase must be achieved in a line with acceptable profitability.
