Abstract

The European grapevine moth, Lobesia botrana (Denis & Schiffermüller) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), is one of the most destructive pests in viticulture worldwide. This study examined the seasonal population dynamics of L. botrana during the 2016 and 2017 grape-growing seasons in the Reyhanlı district of Hatay Province, Türkiye, across ten cultivars (‘Arra 4’, ‘Arra 13’, ‘Arra 15’, ‘Arra 16’, ‘Arra 18’, ‘Arra 19’, ‘Arra 30’, ‘Vitroblack 25’, ‘Crimson’, and ‘Redglop’) using pheromone traps. In 2016, a total of 595 adults were captured between April 27 and August 24, with peak activity occurring from late June to mid-July under average weekly conditions of 25.5°C and 55-56% relative humidity. Captures were highest in ‘Arra 4’ (124 individuals) and lowest in ‘Arra 19’ (35). In 2017, 401 adults were recorded between May 5 and August 4, with earlier population peaks occurring from mid-May to late June or mid-July, coinciding with mean conditions of 26.8°C and 56% relative humidity. The highest captures occurred in ‘Arra 15’ (70) and ‘Crimson’ (63), while ‘Vitroblack 25’ showed the lowest numbers (10). Across both seasons, varietal differences were evident, with ‘Arra 4’, ‘Arra 13’, ‘Arra 15’, and ‘Crimson’ consistently supporting higher moth populations, whereas ‘Arra 19’ and ‘Vitroblack 25’ were less attractive. Despite adult presence, no damage was recorded at harvest in any vineyard. These findings indicate that L. botrana flight patterns are influenced by climatic conditions and grape cultivar, underscoring the importance of variety-specific monitoring to optimize integrated pest management strategies in Mediterranean viticulture.
