Recently, the frequency of heat and cold waves has increased as a result of climate change. Two wheat varieties (Tosunbey and Gokala) were used to determine the effect of sudden low temperatures observed during the seedling stage (before winter). Five plants from each variety were subjected to two priming treatments: control (PC) and 30 mg L⁻¹ paclobutrazol (PBZ-30), and four chilling treatments: control (CK), -10°C for 15 minutes (C1), -10°C for 30 minutes (C2), and -10°C for 15 minutes followed by -15°C for 15 minutes (C3) were applied to the seedlings. Except for the chilling treatments, all procedures were conducted under field conditions. Chilling treatments caused an 80% delay in flowering time (DF), along with a reduction in yield and yield-related traits. The most severe effects were observed under the C3 and C2 Tanımlanması gerekir treatments. Under the C3 treatment, biomass (BY) decreased by an average of 37%, and grain yield (GY) 25%, compared to the control. The positive effect of PBZ was particularly evident in the second year. PBZ shortened the flowering period (DF) by 80% and increased BY, GY, grain weight per spike (GWPS), and thousand-grain weight (TGW), but led to a decrease in the harvest index (HI). The Gokala variety was more affected by cold treatments, especially in the second year, while its positive response to PBZ application was more pronounced. The environment and cultivar significantly influenced growth characteristics.
