Beekeeping Activities in Kastamonu Rural Area

Abstract

Our study was conducted to analyse beekeeping activities in rural areas within the central district of Kastamonu province. The aim was to examine the challenges faced by beekeepers, the production quantities and qualities of honey and other beekeeping products obtained, the impact of increased honey production on the socio-economic life in rural areas, and the status of beekeeping activities in these areas over the years. Given its natural environment, we believe that Kastamonu province has the potential for much higher yields. Beekeeping activities offer employment, income, and healthy nutrition opportunities to people living in rural areas, setting it apart from other agricultural activities. In this context, we have sought to identify the problems encountered in beekeeping activities and propose solutions. Qualitative research methods were utilised during the implementation of the study. In-depth interviews were conducted with 16 beekeepers engaged in beekeeping activities in rural areas. The interview questions were developed based on a detailed literature review. The data obtained indicate that beekeeping activities are negatively affected, particularly by climate change, lack of technical knowledge, marketing problems and insufficient support. A significant proportion of participants stated that honey yields have declined in recent years and that the younger generation has lost interest in these activities. The data obtained has been directly presented, and recommendations have been made based on the current findings.
