Abstract

Potatoes contribute significantly to economic development as a staple food source and a raw material used in many industries. Plant parasitic nematodes (PPNs) are vector organisms that carry certain plant disease-causing microorganisms to healthy plants. Cyst nematodes (Globodera spp.), root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.), potato rot nematode (Ditylenchus destructor), stem and bulb nematode (Ditylenchus dipsaci), and root lesion nematodes (Pratylenchus spp.) are species that cause yield loss in potato plants worldwide. Among root-knot nematodes, M. chitwoodi and M. fallax, in particular, negatively affect tuber quality in addition to yield loss. Studies conducted in potato-growing areas in the Aegean, Central Anatolia, Eastern Anatolia, and Western Black Sea regions of Türkiye have identified plant parasitic nematode species that cause serious yield loss. Cyst nematodes, due to their ability to survive in the soil for many years thanks to their resistant cyst structure, are a concern for sustainable potato farming in provinces where they are intensively produced. Worldwide, potato production is carried out using resistant varieties in the fight against plant parasitic nematodes. To be successful in developing resistant varieties, studies specific to the nematode species and pathotype in the potato growing area are conducted. This study compiles the plant parasitic nematode species and their prevalence identified by different researchers in potato production areas in Türkiye.
