Abstract

This research was carried out to determine the effects of shading on cotton yield, yield components and some physiological parameters in 5 different cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) varieties grown under normal development and shading conditions. In the experiment, 5 cotton varieties (DP 499, Stoneville 468, Stoneville 498, MAY 455, MAY 558) and 30% shade providing net were used as material. The statistical analysis showed that normal and shading conditions had significant effects on seed cotton yield, number of sympodial and monopodial branches, number of nodes of the first fruiting branch, number of nodes, HNR (height/node ratio), number of bolls and first picking percentage. It was determined that there were significant differences among the varieties in the number of nodes of first fruiting branch, number of sympodial branches, number of nodes, boll weight, seed cotton boll weight, ginning percentage and first picking percentage. Average seed cotton yield was 3537.75 kg ha-1 under normal development and 2638.15 kg ha-1 under shading conditions, and that the seed cotton yield decreased by 25.42% with shading. As a result of the study, it was found that shading led to decreases in seed cotton yield, the number of sympodial branches, the node of the first fruiting branch, and the total number of nodes. In contrast shading increased the number of monopodial branches, boll number, HNR, and first picking percentage. Shading did not positively affect cotton yield through mitigating the impact of high temperatures. However, at least two years of research are needed before a definitive recommendation can be made.
