In this study, phytoplanktonic organisms of 12 ponds located in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus were investigated in terms of taxonomical and ecological aspects. For each pond, only one sampling station was selected. Phytoplanktonic organisms sampled from 12 ponds between 22 and 24 June 2002 using a 55 µm mesh plankton net were fixed in 4% formalin solution and then examined under a light microscope As a result of the study, a total of 85 phytoplankton taxa were determined, of which, 15 taxa belonged to Cyanobacteria, 24 to Heterokontophyta, 3 to Dinoflagellata, 9 to Euglenophyta and 34 to Chlorophyta. The ponds were divided into 4 groups according to clustering and non-metric multidimensional scaling analysis based on the presence and absence of phytoplankton taxa. It was evaluated that shallowness and salinity in the ponds affected by semi-arid climatic conditions were major factors in the distribution of phytoplankton. All of the taxa determined in the current study are the first records for the freshwater algal flora of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, as there was no previous study on freshwater phytoplanktonic organisms in the region.
