Medicinal Aromatic Plants Used in Family Planning Process and Evaluation of Their Social Dimension: Approach Suggestions for Rural Women

Abstract

The aim of this study is to provide general information about the medicinal and aromatic plants used during pregnancy, postpartum, and lactation periods, and to contribute to the literature. As a result of the study, it was determined that Sage (Salvia officinalis L.), Peppermint (Mentha piperita L.), Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.), and Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla L.) were used to a large extent; Linden (Tilia tomentosa Moench), Thyme (Thymus serpyllum L.), Nettle (Urtica dioica L.), Black seed (Nigella sativa L.), Almond (Amygdalus communis L.), and Ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) were used at a moderate level; and finally, Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea (L.) Moench), Garlic (Allium sativum L.), Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.), Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.), St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum L.), Flaxseed (Linum usitatissimum L.), Raspberry leaf (Rubus idaeus L.), and Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) were used to a lesser extent. It has been observed that pregnant women turn to herbal products to reduce their stress levels and cope with issues such as nausea and vomiting. During the postpartum period, herbal remedies are preferred not only for alleviating stress but also for increasing milk production. However, there are important considerations regarding the use of certain herbal products during pregnancy and the postpartum period. The use of such plants may negatively affect both the mother’s and the baby’s health. Therefore, it is crucial for pregnant and breastfeeding women to consult a healthcare professional before using any herbal product.
