The Effects of Environmental Enrichment on Performance, Behavior, Slaughter, Carcass and Meat Quality Traits in Guinea Fowls

Abstract

In this study, it was aimed to determine the effects of environmental enrichment practices on growth performance, slaughter, meat quality and some behavioral traits of Guinea fowls reared under closed rearing. The study was carried out in Yozgat Bozok University BOZOKTUAM Yerköy Animal Husbandry Facility and the animal material consisted of 200 d-old guinea fowls. In this study, two different treatment groups were created with and without environmental enrichment. In both treatment groups, guinea fowls were reared in 5 replicates in a littered-floor system. The environmental enrichment group included the perching platforms, stone materials and foliage feeder objects. Guinea fowls were randomly allocated to the treatment groups after hatching and reared in the same poultry house until 13 weeks of age at slaughter. Lower slaughter weight was found in the environmental enrichment group and feed conversion ratio was better in the control group at 10 and 12 weeks of age. Slaughter weight and hot carcass weight were lower in the environmental enrichment group. Higher levels of foraging, running, feeding, drinking, swelling, wing flapping and feather cleaning behaviors were observed in the environmental enrichment group. Feather pecking and lying down behavior were found higher in the control group. This study suggests that environmental enrichment practices can contribute to a higher welfare by increasing the display of natural behaviors without causing significant changes in overall performance, carcass and meat quality traits in guinea fowls reared in closed-barn systems.
