Abstract

In most European countries, air pollution and environmental protection are becoming increasingly important issues. Recent studies shown that, in Switzerland, offroad traffic is responsible for a significant part of the air pollution. Agricultural tractors account for a major part of overall offroad traffic. A rapid increase is observed in the number of tractors in developed and developing countries. Due to this increase in tractor numbers, there is a growing interest in tractor exhaust emissions and their impact on the environment. Determining the correct emission values and the measurement methods used have gained importance. There are regulations for emission measurements on an engine test rig for type approval of tractor engines, but there is no procedure for emission measurements at different operating conditions of the tractor. Studies have shown that the exhaust gases measured under different operating conditions of tractors are higher than the values obtained under steady-state conditions in emission test methods. These results reveal the necessity of changing the test procedures used in emission measurement. The development of new tests will reduce exhaust emissions from tractors.
