Focus and Scope
Turkish Journal of Agriculture - Food Science and Technology (TURJAF) aims to publish original and cutting-edge research results and reviews on Agriculture related aspects of life sciences. Emphasis will be given to studies involving farm animals (cattle, buffaloes, sheep, goats, horses, pigs and poultry), plant (horticultural crops, field crops, Medical And Aromatic Plants), aquatic products (but studies with aquatic and laboratory animal species can be considered for publication if the areas are related to fundamental aspects of farm animals), soil science, sustainable farming systems, agricultural economics, genetics and plant breeding, forest science, plant protection science, plant, soil and environment, research in agricultural engineering, soil and water research and agricultural statistics.
Turkish Journal of Agriculture - Food Science and Technology (TURJAF) features reviews as well as original and technical articles on basic and applied food research. The main objective of this periodical is the dissemination of information relating to current research results, novel theories and technologies, and professional activities across geographical as well as academic boundaries. Coverage ranges from chemistry, biotechnology, nutrition, physical and physicochemical properties, processing, cooking, unit operations, analysis, measurements and control, safety and health to marketing and environmental aspects related to food.
Peer Review Process
All manuscripts submitted to the Turkish Journal of Agriculture - Food Science and Technology (TURJAF) are peer-reviewed according to the following procedure:
Initial review: The Editor-in-Chief evaluates each manuscript to determine if its topic and content is suitable for consideration by the Turkish Journal of Agriculture - Food Science and Technology (TURJAF). Manuscripts that do not meet minimum criteria are returned to the authors within one week of receipt. This is in the best interest of the authors who could then decide to either correct the problems or to submit the manuscript to a more appropriate venue, avoiding delays from a lengthy review process that would nonetheless lead to rejection.
Peer review: Manuscripts that pass the initial review are assigned to an Associate Editor, who selects several referees based on their expertise in that particular field. Each manuscript is reviewed by at least two referees under a double-blind peer review process, where both the referees and the authors are kept anonymous. Referees are asked to evaluate the manuscript based on its originality, soundness of methodology, impact to design research, and relevance to design practices. To facilitate timely publication, referees are asked to complete their reviews within one month. After collecting the referees' reports, the Associate Editor makes a recommendation on the acceptability of the manuscript to the Editor-in-Chief.
Recommendation: Based on the referees' comments and the Associate Editor's recommendation, the Editor-in-Chief makes a final decision on the acceptability of the manuscript and communicates to the authors the decision, along with referees' reports. The final decision can be "Accept Submission", "Revisions Required", "Resubmit for Review", "Resubmit Elsewhere", or "Decline Submission." A revised manuscript should be re-submitted within six months of the decision. It will usually be returned to the original referees for evaluation.
Open Access Policy
Turkish Journal of Agriculture - Food Science and Technology (TURJAF) provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.
Open Access enables authors to obtain the maximum possible exposure for their work. Freely available papers are read more, cited more, and have more impact than ones available only to paid subscribers. As an experiment, enter a research topic into a search engine like Google and see how many links you obtain to papers published in traditional journals. You will find that most references are to working papers, not to published papers, because working papers are freely available. The advent of the web has made free dissemination of research feasible and financially viable. Because existing specialty journals obtain revenues from selling subscriptions, primarily to libraries, access to the research they publish is limited. The attractive revenue stream that such subscriptions provide makes it unlikely that these journals will convert to Open Access. Thus a need exists for new refereed Open Access journals to replace existing journals. We believe that the establishment of a major Open Access journal in communication study will lead others to establish Open Access journals for many sub-fields and specialities in communcation, reclaiming full control for the profession of its research output. We hope that this will lead the profession to a new norm in which all research is freely available.

Manuscripts submitted to Turkish Journal of Agriculture - Food Science and Technology (TURJAF) should be original and must not be plagiarized. If Similarity Index (SI) of the article is above 19%, it is sent back to the corresponding author to revise it and bring its SI below 19%, failure of which will result in rejection of article at very first step. If plagiarism is proved after publication of the article, that article will be immediately withdrawn and removed from the website and the concerned authors will be considered ineligible for publication of their articles in Turkish Journal of Agriculture - Food Science and Technology (TURJAF) for five years.

Turkish Journal of Agriculture - Food Science and Technology (TURJAF) is electronic peer reviewed international journal committed to upholding the highest standards of publication ethics. It is abbreviated as “Turkish JAF Sci.Tech.”. In order to provide our readers with a journal of highest quality we state the following principles of Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement adopted from Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors and Code of Conduct for Journal Publishers, published by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). All articles not in accordance with these standards will be removed from the publication if malpractice is discovered at any time even after the publication.

Duties of the Publisher
-Handling of unethical publishing behaviour
In cases of alleged or proven scientific misconduct, fraudulent publication or plagiarism, the publisher, in close collaboration with the editors, will take all appropriate measures to clarify the situation and to amend the article in question. This includes the prompt publication of an erratum, clarification or, in the most severe case, the retraction of the affected work. The publisher, together with the editors, shall take reasonable steps to identify and prevent the publication of papers where research misconduct has occurred, and under no circumstances encourage such misconduct or knowingly allow such misconduct to take place.
-Publishing System
TURJAF uses Open Journal Systems 2.4.8.1, which is open source journal management and publishing software developed, supported, and freely distributed by the Public Knowledge Project under the GNU General Public License.
Duties / Responsibilities of the Editor and the Editorial Board
-Content
TURJAF-papers must be original and adhere to a high scientific (content) and technical (language, artwork, etc.) standard.
The International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (living and fossil animals) and the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi and plants should be followed rigorously.
-Material studied
When new material has been collected for the purposes of the study, the authors must ensure that all necessary permits have been obtained prior to collecting. The authors are required to deposit all type materials in a public natural history collection.
To prevent taxon extinction and to respect biodiversity resources of the country where specimens are collected, it is strongly recommended that authors comply with the IUCN Policy Statement on Research Involving Species at Risk of Extinction and the Convention on the Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. Additionally, when data collection involves the killing of an organism, the number of specimens collected should be limited to the minimum necessary to conduct the research; and techniques used to capture or handle animals should conform to the highest standards of animal welfare.
-Publication decisions
The Editor is responsible for deciding which of the articles submitted to the journal should be published. The publication decision should be guided by the policies of the journal‘s Editorial Board, and should be based exclusively on the academic merit and the decision of the reviewers. Peer review assists the editor in making editorial decisions and through the editorial communications with the author may also assist the author in improving the paper.
-Fair play
An editor should evaluate manuscripts for their intellectual content without regard to race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, ethnic origin, citizenship, or political philosophy of the authors.
-Confidentiality
The Editor and any editorial staff must not disclose any information about a submitted manuscript to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, potential reviewers, other editorial advisers, and the publisher, as appropriate.
-Disclosure and conflicts of interest
Unpublished materials disclosed in a submitted manuscript must not be used in an editor‘s own research without the express written consent of the author. Privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review must be kept confidential and not used for personal advantage. Editors should excuse themselves (i.e. should ask a co-editor, associate editor or other member of the editorial board instead to review and consider) from considering manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or connections with any of the authors, companies, or (possibly) institutions connected to the papers. Editors should require all contributors to disclose relevant competing interests and publish corrections if competing interests are revealed after publication. If needed, other appropriate action should be taken, such as the publication of a retraction or expression of concern.
-Involvement and cooperation in investigations
TURJAF will respond to all allegations or suspicions of research or publication misconduct raised by readers, reviewers, or other editors. Cases of possible plagiarism or duplicate/redundant publication will be assessed by the journal. In other cases, the journal may request an investigation by the institution or other appropriate bodies. Every reported act of unethical publishing behaviour must be looked into, even if it is discovered years after publication.
Duties / Responsibilities of Authors
-Reporting standards
Authors of original research should present an accurate account of the work performed and the results, followed by an objective discussion of the significance of the work. The manuscript should contain sufficient detail and references to permit others to replicate the work. Review articles should be accurate, objective and comprehensive, while editorial 'opinion' or perspective pieces should be clearly identified as such. Fraudulent or knowingly inaccurate statements constitute unethical behaviour and are unacceptable.
-Originality and Plagiarism
Authors should ensure that they have written and submit only entirely original works, and if they have used the work and/or words of others, that this has been appropriately cited. Publications that have been influential in determining the nature of the work reported in the manuscript should also be cited. Plagiarism takes many forms, from "passing off" another's paper as the author's own, to copying or paraphrasing substantial parts of another's paper (without attribution), to claiming results from research conducted by others. Plagiarism in all its forms constitutes unethical publishing behaviour and is unacceptable.

-Acknowledgement of sources
Authors should ensure that they have properly acknowledged the work of others, and should also cite publications that have been influential in determining the nature of the reported work. Information obtained privately (from conversation, correspondence or discussion with third parties) must not be used or reported without explicit, written permission from the source. Authors should not use information obtained in the course of providing confidential services, such as refereeing manuscripts or grant applications, unless they have obtained the explicit written permission of the author(s) of the work involved in these services.
-Authorship of the Paper
Only persons who meet these authorship criteria should be listed as authors in the manuscript as they must be able to take public responsibility for the content: (i) made significant contributions to the conception, design, execution, data acquisition, or analysis/interpretation of the study; and (ii) drafted the manuscript or revised it critically for important intellectual content; and (iii) have seen and approved the final version of the paper and agreed to its submission for publication. All persons who made substantial contributions to the work reported in the manuscript (such as technical help, writing and editing assistance, general support) but who do not meet the criteria for authorship must not be listed as an author, but should be acknowledged in the "Acknowledgements" section after their written permission to be named as been obtained. The corresponding author should ensure that all appropriate co-authors (according to the above definition) and no inappropriate co-authors are included in the author list and verify that all co-authors have seen and approved the final version of the manuscript and agreed to its submission for publication.
-Multiple, redundant or concurrent publication
Papers describing essentially the same research should not be published in more than one journal or primary publication. Hence, authors should not submit for consideration a manuscript that has already been published in another journal. Submission of a manuscript concurrently to more than one journal is unethical publishing behaviour and unacceptable.
The publication of some kinds of articles (such as clinical guidelines, translations) in more than one journal is sometimes justifiable, provided that certain conditions are met. The authors and editors of the journals concerned must agree to the secondary publication, which must reflect the same data and interpretation of the primary document. The primary reference must be cited in the secondary publication.
-Disclosure and Conflicts of interest and financial support
Authors should—at the earliest stage possible (generally by submitting a disclosure form at the time of submission and including a statement in the manuscript)—disclose any conflicts of interest that might be construed to influence the results or their interpretation in the manuscript. Examples of potential conflicts of interest that should be disclosed include financial ones such as honoraria, educational grants or other funding, participation in speakers‘ bureaus, membership, employment, consultancies, stock ownership, or other equity interest, and paid expert testimony or patent-licensing arrangements, as well as non-financial ones such as personal or professional relationships, affiliations, knowledge or beliefs in the subject matter or materials discussed in the manuscript. All sources of financial support for the work should be disclosed (including the grant number or other reference number if any).
-Hazards and human or animal subjects
If the work involves chemicals, procedures or equipment that have any unusual hazards inherent in their use, the authors must clearly identify these in the manuscript. If the work involves the use of animals or human participants, the authors should ensure that all procedures were performed in compliance with relevant laws and institutional guidelines and that the appropriate institutional committee(s) has approved them; the manuscript should contain a statement to this effect. Authors should also include a statement in the manuscript that informed consent was obtained for experimentation with human participants. The privacy rights of human participants must always be observed.
-Peer review
Authors are obliged to participate in the peer review process and cooperate fully by responding promptly to editors‘ requests for raw data, clarifications, and proof of ethics approval, patient consents and copyright permissions. In the case of a first decision of "revisions necessary", authors should respond to the reviewers‘ comments systematically, point by point, and in a timely manner, revising and re-submitting their manuscript to the journal by the deadline given.
-Fundamental errors in published works
When authors discover significant errors or inaccuracies in their own published work, it is their obligation to promptly notify the journal‘s editors or publisher and cooperate with them to either correct the paper in the form of an erratum or to retract the paper. If the editors or publisher learns from a third party that a published work contains a significant error or inaccuracy, then it is the authors‘ obligation to promptly correct or retract the paper or provide evidence to the journal editors of the correctness of the paper.
-Data access and retention
Authors may be asked to provide the raw data of their study together with the manuscript for editorial review and should be prepared to make the data publicly available if practicable. In any event, authors should ensure accessibility of such data to other competent professionals for at least 10 years after publication (preferably via an institutional or subject-based data repository or other data centre), provided that the confidentiality of the participants can be protected and legal rights concerning proprietary data do not preclude their release.
-Authors should only submit papers only on work that has been conducted in an ethical and responsible manner and that complies with all relevant legislation
Duties / Responsibilities of Reviewers
- Contribution to Editorial Decisions
Peer review assists editors in making editorial decisions and, through editorial communications with authors, may assist authors in improving their manuscripts. Peer review is an essential component of formal scholarly communication and lies at the heart of scientific endeavour. TURJAF shares the view of many that all scholars who wish to contribute to the scientific process have an obligation to do a fair share of reviewing.
-Promptness
Any selected referee who feels unqualified to review the research reported in a manuscript or knows that its prompt review will be impossible should notify the editors and excuse himself from the review process.
-Confidentiality
Any manuscripts received for review are confidential documents and must be treated as such; they must not be shown to or discussed with others except if authorized by the Editor-in-Chief (who would only do so under exceptional and specific circumstances). This applies also to invited reviewers who decline the review invitation.
-Standards of Objectivity
Reviews should be conducted objectively. Personal criticism of the author is inappropriate. Referees should express their views clearly with supporting arguments.
-Acknowledgement of Sources
Reviewers should identify relevant published work that has not been cited by the authors. Any statement that an observation, derivation, or argument had been previously reported should be accompanied by the relevant citation. A reviewer should also call to the editor‘s attention any substantial similarity or overlap between the manuscript under consideration and any other published paper of which they have personal knowledge.
-Disclosure and Conflict of Interest
Any invited referee who has conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or connections with any of the authors, companies or institutions connected to the manuscript and the work described therein should immediately notify the editors to declare their conflicts of interest and decline the invitation to review so that alternative reviewers can be contacted.
Unpublished material disclosed in a submitted manuscript must not be used in a reviewer‘s own research without the express written consent of the authors. Privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review must be kept confidential and not used for the reviewer‘s personal advantage. This applies also to invited reviewers who decline the review invitation.
Research Ethics
-Potential Issues
We do our best to avoid ethical issues before publication, but anyone who suspects an ethical issue is encouraged to contact us. The editorial team of TURJAF can be contacted at editor@agrifoodscience.com. Every suspicion of ethical issues, misconduct or conflict of interest will be investigated by the journal.
-Usage of Human Subjects
Investigations with human subjects must state in the Methods section that the research followed the guidelines of the Declaration of Helsinki and Tokyo for humans, and was approved by the institutional human experimentation committee or equivalent, and that informed consent was obtained.
-Usage of Experimental Animals
Studies using experimental animals must state in the Methods section that the research was conducted in accordance with the internationally accepted principles for laboratory animal use. For cases of wild species collected, the license number of the collection must be provided, as well as the name of the agency that granted the approval. Articles describing work with animals will be accepted only if the procedures used are clearly described and conform to the legal requirements of the country in which the work was carried out and to all institutional guidelines. Methods sections of papers on research using human or animal subjects and/or tissue or field sampling must include required ethics statements. The absence of information about the ethical procedures of the work may result in rejection of the author‘s paper by referees and/or editors.
-Investigation
The editor-in-chief will conduct the investigation.
All members of the TURJAF editorial team, as well as reviewers and authors, are encouraged to provide their feedback and suggestions to improve communication during the treatment of ethical issues.
The editor-in-chief will contact both parties in any conflict and study their responses. No repressive action will be decided without sufficient evidence of misconduct.
If the case involves another journal, its editor-in-chief will be contacted and both editorial teams will investigate and, if possible, make a common decision.
-Resolution of ethical problems
If the paper incriminated has not yet been published, publication will be delayed until the problem is resolved. The manuscript may be rejected if there is any evidence that the author(s) has (have) not respected the present code of conduct.
If the paper incriminated has already been published, the decision of the editor-in-chief will depend on the nature and severity of the problem:
If it is proven that the dispute is only due to a difference of scientific point of view between the author and the complainant, the journal must encourage debate. The complainant can publish a paper in TURJAF and the author of the first paper has a right to reply. These papers, as all the others submitted to TURJAF, will follow our evaluation process and will be reviewed before any editorial decision.
For minor issues, all the persons involved in the decision and publication process of the article are informed. If all parties agree, the publication of a corrigendum or addendum in TURJAF will be the solution to solve minor problems.
In very serious cases (plagiarism for example), the retraction of a publication can be decided. The readers and all persons involved in the decision and publication process of the article will be informed. The head of the department where the incriminated author (or reviewer) works will be informed.
The solution to a problem can vary considerably depending on the case. The TURJAF editorial team will always try to find the most appropriate solution and will involve every person or institution concerned by the problem in the investigation.
Additionally, the editorial board fully adheres to the Code of Conduct and the Best Practice Guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). To ensure the integrity of the content published in European Journal of Taxonomy, editors are strongly encouraged to use COPE‘s flowcharts whenever they suspect an ethical issue may be present.
-Nomenclatural problems
If a potential nomenclatural problem is raised, the appropriate nomenclatural code is consulted and the problem is discussed with both parties and with members of the TURJAF editorial team. If no answer is found, experts in nomenclature will be consulted to help the TURJAF editors find a solution.
Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement
Ethics and malpractice statements of TURJAF are based on COPE‘s Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors. It is necessary to agree upon standards of expected ethical behaviour for all parties involved in the act of publishing: the authors, editors and the editorial board, reviewers and the publisher.
