Abstract

Land consolidation is the bringing together of fragmented parcels of land. Land consolidation and the preservation of fragmentation are tools of land management for agricultural lands. There are studies that fragmentation may not always be a problem and can be benefical. However, existing studies recommend the prior assessment of site- specific conditions in deciding whether to pursue consolidation or maintain fragmentation. Moreover, in order to decide on any land management approach or continue with both, the connections between social, economic, cultural, legal and environmental conditions also need to be evaluated. Therefore, in this study, various forms and causes of fragmentation in agricultural lands, as well as the positive and negative impacts of fragmentation, are critically and objectively reviewed based on the literature. The aim is to identify the conditions and connections related to adopting any land consolidation approach in a specific area.
