Abstract

The traditional method of agriculture, which continues today, depends on many factors. For this reason, soilless farming techniques, where the control is entirely in the producer, are increasing rapidly. The most crucial element of soilless agriculture is lighting. By using artificial lighting, the plants’ photoperiod can be controlled, and it is reported as a result of the research that it is possible to increase the yield. This study investigated the effects of different light intensities and durations on the development and yield of broad green and red-leaved basil plants (Ocimum basilicum) using cold white and full spectrum light, which is the spectrum with the highest illumination efficiency. In the study, which was carried out on a total area of 13.5 m2, the relationships between the nitrogen balance index (NBI) and the yield values obtained after harvest were evaluated statistically by applying different artificial lighting intensities and durations 27 separate 0,5 m2 trial plots. In the study, the three light intensity factor (ASF) levels were 165.6 µmol m-2 s-1, 248.4 µmol m-2 s-1 and 331.2 µmol m-2 s as photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD), respectively. Three light exposure duration factor (ASF) levels with (12-16-20 hours day-1) were tested. According to the results, 331.2 µmol s-1 light intensity factor and 20 hours day-1 light exposure duration factor for a broad green basil plant, 331.2 µmol s-1 light intensity factor and 12 hours light exposure duration factor for a broad red basil plant, the highest yield values were obtained.
