Vitex agnus-castus L., commonly known as chaste tree, is a small deciduous tree whose fruits have been used for over 2500 years in ancient Egypt, Greece, Iran and Rome for various gynecological problems. Vitex, including its leaves and fruits, has been used for herbal medicinal purposes since ancient times, by being boiled and dried into fruit form. It is known that Vitex extract has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anticancer properties. Various bioactive compounds such as iridoids, diterpenoids, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds have been identified in Vitex extract in several studies. Food supplements containing Vitex extract are mostly produced for women to improve menstruation conditions and alleviate premenstrual syndrome. In this review, functional properties, the results of clinical studies, toxicological properties, food supplements, patents, and food applications of Vitex extract are summarized.
